Two Hot Fitness Trends You Cannot Afford to Ignore If You Are Serious About Getting Fit Fast

Expert Author Valerie Mills
If your goals include getting fit this year, you will want to take advantage of two trends that can speed up the time to reach your targets. You won't need to spend a fortune for equipment (in most cases) unless you choose to do so. But you will benefit in a big way.
The HIIT Trend
The first trend has been lurking in the background and finally is becoming popular, mainly because it makes a whole lot of sense AND it works. It's called high intensity interval training.
Instead of spending an hour on a stationary bike or a treadmill, you can cut your time to 20 minutes (a 67% decrease in time) and get twice the health benefit.
Here's an example of how you'd spend your time:
1. Spend 2 minutes warming up.
2. Go all out for 30 seconds
3. Proceed at a comfortable pace for 90 seconds
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 eight times.
5. Cool down for 2 minutes.
You will quickly bring your heart rate into the aerobics "zone" for you. You need a heart rate monitor (the equipment you are using might have one) so you don't exceed the maximum rate for you.
You can do HIIT in the fitness club, on your own home equipment, or simply use steps or a running pace outdoors. The cost of using this technique ranges from the cost of a heart rate monitor to as much as you choose to spend on equipment.
The Exercise DVD System Trend
Exercise DVDs have been around forever. In the past few years, they have morphed into exercise DVD systems.
These systems usually include sets of DVDs repeated for long time frames (60, 90 days) and designed so that the user's body never "gets used to" a particular routine, a concept called muscle confusion.
A system may incorporate dance, strength conditioning, interval training and/or target certain body areas. Most address an eating plan for the person following the system.
The Benefits
Exercise DVD systems can serve as a substitute for weight lifting, producing similar fat burning results. A good system provides a break from traditional strength training while maintaining or even enhancing fitness. Some DVD system users will use the same set of DVDs several times.
The best DVDs produce results (weight loss, strength, body transformation) for those people who stick with the program. Some people will use the same set of DVDs more than once. The cost of these sets of DVDs can be several hundred dollars when equipment cost is included.
Takeaway Points:
  1. Forget prolonged cardio sessions - you will lose muscle mass (the opposite of what you need to do to lose weight). Instead, reap the benefits of HIIT.
